Water and Hardscape

Walls that glow from the top down.

Lights hidden under wall caps or at the base of terraced walls, washing the stone face with warm light and making steps and slopes safer.

  • Fixtures: Under-cap strip lights, small wall lights and base grazers
  • Effects: Wash from above, graze from below
  • Wire: Hidden in or behind the wall

The overview

What it is, and why it matters.

Retaining walls add structure to a sloped yard, and with light they become a feature. Fixtures hidden under the cap stones wash the wall face with a gentle light from above, and low fixtures at the base can graze the stone from below. Either way, the wall glows, the plants above and below are lit and the steps beside it are safe.

We light retaining walls for homes in Nashville and across Middle Tennessee. We plan wire routes before or during construction when possible, or find clean ways to add lights to existing walls, and we match the fixtures and color to the stone.

Why owners choose it

Four things done right.

A glowing wall face

Light from under the cap washes the stone evenly.

Hidden fixtures

Lights tuck beneath caps and behind plants.

Safe grade changes

Steps and landings along the wall are visible.

Planned wire

Wire routes are planned with the wall, or hidden carefully afterward.

Good questions

Retaining Wall Lighting: common questions

Can lights be added to an existing wall?

Often, yes. Fixtures can go under many cap stones, or at the base of the wall, with wire hidden along the back. We look at how the wall is built.

What's best for stone walls, washing or grazing?

Grazing from below brings out texture, and washing from above gives even light. We test both on your wall at night.

  • A visit near dusk first: we walk the property, see where you use it and decide what deserves light and what should stay dark
  • A night demonstration on your own trees and walls, so you see the real brightness and color before you decide
  • A written plan and price with the fixtures, the controls, the wiring and the cleanup spelled out
